Personality disorders are long-standing patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating to others that cause significant distress and difficulty in daily life. At Cardinal Clinic, we understand that personality disorders are treatable conditions — not character flaws. Our specialist clinicians use evidence-based therapies to help patients develop greater self-understanding, emotional regulation, and healthier patterns of relating to themselves and others.
Conditions We Treat
We provide specialist assessment and treatment for the full range of conditions in this area, including:
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD/EUPD)
Intense and unstable emotions, fear of abandonment, impulsive behaviour, and unstable relationships.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy, often masking deep vulnerability.
Avoidant Personality Disorder
Extreme sensitivity to rejection, social inhibition, and feelings of inadequacy leading to avoidance of social situations.
Dependent Personality Disorder
Excessive need to be taken care of, leading to submissive, clinging behaviour and fear of separation.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
A pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others, often accompanied by impulsivity and aggression.
Mixed Personality Presentations
Many patients present with features of more than one personality disorder — our assessment captures the full clinical picture.
Our Approach to Treatment
We combine consultant-led psychiatric care with evidence-based psychotherapy to create an integrated and effective treatment plan. Our goal is not just to alleviate symptoms, but to empower you with the understanding and tools to manage your condition in the long term.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
The gold-standard treatment for BPD, teaching mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT)
Helping patients understand their own and others' mental states, reducing interpersonal difficulties.
Schema Therapy
Identifying and changing deep-seated patterns (schemas) that drive problematic behaviours and emotional responses.
Psychiatric Medication
Where appropriate, medication to manage specific symptoms such as emotional instability, impulsivity, or co-occurring depression.

“
A personality disorder diagnosis is not a life sentence. With the right therapeutic relationship and evidence-based treatment, patients can and do achieve meaningful and lasting change.
